Conversations on Race, Privilege, & Inclusion with Jillian Lindsey

EP142- Conversations on Race, Privilege, & Inclusion with Jillian Lindsey

We don't know what it's like to live as another person. When I get pulled over, I'm upset about having to pay a ticket or that my insurance might go up. But if I was black and I got pulled over I'm more likely to be worried that I might get shot, beaten, or harassed. That is my privilege. If you aren't black, you don't know what it's like to be pulled over by police. If you aren't a woman, you don't know the fear a woman might have walking through a parking lot at night. If you aren't brown, you don't know what it is like to be mistaken for a terrorist, illegal, or even a thug. If you are straight, you can't imagine the challenges associated with telling your parents you are queer. We think our realities are the truth, but they are only our perspective and our truth. Until we look and listen through the lens of another, especially those different from us we can't possibly understand their experience or reality. My hope is that through hearing the perspectives of those that are systematically oppressed, disenfranchised, or often encounter racism and prejudice, we can learn to empathize, open our hearts and our minds to their realities and do what is necessary to make the system, our society, and the world a place of equality, love, and inclusion.

Today we are joined by Jillian Lindsey. Jillian is an Ontologically trained coach who's leading anti-racism, diversity, and inclusion healing workshops. She's a biracial, mixed race woman and single mother of two who's committed to creating safe spaces where we can talk about racial dynamics. Prior to becoming a coach she worked in Corporate America, Biotech, as well as Theater, Fashion, and Music.

I feel so privileged as this episode begins with Jillian sharing a extremely moving poem she recently authored.
