Ep141 - Conversations on Race, Privilege, & Inclusion with Mark Hunter
We don't know what it's like to live as another person. When I get pulled over, I'm upset about having to pay a ticket or that my insurance might go up. But if I was black and I got pulled over I'm more likely to be worried that I might get shot, beaten, or harassed. That is my privilege. If you aren't black, you don't know what it's like to be pulled over by police. If you aren't a woman, you don't know the fear a woman might have walking through a parking lot at night. If you aren't brown, you don't know what it is like to be mistaken for a terrorist, illegal, or even a thug. If you are straight, you can't imagine the challenges associated with telling your parents you are queer. We think our realities are the truth, but they are only our perspective and our truth. Until we look and listen through the lens of another, especially those different from us we can't possibly understand their experience or reality. My hope is that through hearing the perspectives of those that are systematically oppressed, disenfranchised, or often encounter racism and prejudice, we can learn to empathize, open our hearts and our minds to their realities and do what is necessary to make the system, our society, and the world a place of equality, love, and inclusion.
Today we are joined for a second time on The DreamMason Podcast with my coach, Master Certified Coach, Mark Hunter. Mark is a Business and Leadership Coach, he's a Senior Leader of Accomplishment Coaching Leadership and Coach Training Program as well as their Chief Head of Development. He's also the author of The Brink, How Great Leadership is Invented. Mark is one of the most brilliant, logical, loving, and powerful humans I've ever encountered and he's taught me so much especially when it comes to living a life from integrity!
We discuss:
-How nothing changes until white people become uncomfortable
-Discomfort is what causes things to transform
-The lessons Mark learned about race as a African American child
-Code Switching
-His experience of being a minority on a college campus
-The things "black people" do or don't do
-To be white and successful is normal, to be black and successful it's thought of as a win, not normal
-Subtle racism
-Candace Owens
-Battling racism is a marathon not a sprint
