Ep136 - Conversations on Race, Privilege, & Inclusion with MMA Champ Eddie "Truck" Gordon
We don't know what it's like to live as another person. When I get pulled over, I'm upset about having to pay a ticket or that my insurance might go up. But if I was black and I got pulled over I'm more likely to be worried that I might get shot, beaten, or harassed. That is my privilege. If you aren't black, you don't know what it's like to be pulled over by police. If you aren't a woman, you don't know the fear a woman might have walking through a parking lot at night. If you aren't brown, you don't know what it is like to be mistaken for a terrorist, illegal, or even a thug. If you are straight, you can't imagine the challenges associated with telling your parents you are queer. We think our realities are the truth, but they are only our perspective and our truth. Until we look and listen through the lens of another, especially those different from us we can't possibly understand their experience or reality. My hope is that through hearing the perspectives of those that are systematically oppressed, disenfranchised, or often encounter racism and prejudice, we can learn to empathize, open our hearts and our minds to their realities and do what is necessary to make the system, our society, and the world a place of equality, love, and inclusion.
Today, Author, Speaker, Winner of the Ultimate Fighter, and former Finance & Marketing professional, Eddie "Truck" Gordon, joins me in this conversation to share his experience as an African American man, in a bi-racial marriage, with bi-racial children.
We discuss:
-His first experiences with race
-Inadvertent racism
-Experiences in being in a mixed-race marriage
-Talking to his children about race and racism
-His experiences in college and being a minority on campus
-Black men and sex
