Transforming The Relationship with My Body: How Hiring a Coach Made All the Difference

It feels so douchy and cringey to post this picture but for as long as I can remember, I’ve hated my body. It’s been a constant source of frustration, discomfort, and a never-ending inner dialogue of “not good enough.”

My belly is too big, my shoulders are not broad enough, my waist is not narrow enough, my biceps and triceps are not big enough, and my chest and back are not defined enough.

Is any of this the truth? Through my eyes and perspective, yes, and that is what creates our lived reality. I just know I’ve never liked my body, and no matter how much I exercised, how intentionally I ate, or what else I tried to transform my body, I felt like it never changed.

How Hiring a Coach Helped Me Transform The Relationship With My Body

Finally, four months ago, I did what I advise others to do. I hired someone to support me.

If we can’t get a result or create the experience we desire on our own, it’s a massive missed opportunity not to hire someone to help us see our blind spots. I hired a coach, nutrition expert, and trainer to support me, Heather May Brown.

In 120 days and at 41 years old, these are the results. Honestly, I feel really proud of myself!

— but not just because of the external results.

I pushed through so much resistance and learned SO much.

Heather had me completely change how I saw eating and nourishing myself; I was surprised to find I was under-eating and over-exercising in ways that weren’t right for my body.

The hardest part was the first two months when Heather had me approach eating and working out in different ways that I didn’t like. I wanted to quit and go back to my old ways of doing things, but I stuck with it, ignored my doubts, and chose to trust the process.

It’s crazy how often we think we know best, doing things over and over, getting similar results, and then feeling upset and disappointed.

If we’re ready for real transformation, hiring coaches, trainers, consultants, or people from the outside that can see opportunities we can’t is a game-changer.

No matter the area of your life, here’s my recipe for success: Get support, commit, practice trust, get outside your comfort zone, and stay the course!
