How My Client Ditched His 9-to-5 Job and Found Freedom

While I was in Tulum getting married, a Client quit his 9-to-5 job.

We've been talking about this for over two years.

This was a big big big deal.

He started working with me because he wanted time freedom and to accelerate the growth of his side business so he could leave his 9-to-5. The process wasn't fast, and it sure wasn't simple. The biggest problem was Golden Handcuffs. He was good at his job and kept making more money in his 9-to-5. This made it harder and harder to leave and riskier.

A good problem, except sometimes good problems keep us from what we deeply and truly want. Sometimes we must be brave enough to give up the good to have the great. So do you settle for a good life or fight for the amazing life you want?

Don't Settle for the 9-to-5 Grind

It reminds me of when I left my safe and comfortable job as the Director of Operations & Franchise Operations for an entertaining Restaurant Group in NYC. I had a great job. For the most part, it was easy and fun, and I had a lot of freedom. There was so much possibility and upside. But I wanted to be happier and more fulfilled. I often felt stuck, trapped, and choked by the job because it wasn't where I wanted to be.

One day my coach asked me what I feared in quitting my job and starting my own Coaching and Consulting Business. I shared with her I was afraid to fail. I was scared of what people would say. I was scared I would let the people who love me most down. I was afraid. The fear made me feel trapped.

It's hard to be afraid as a man (I know it is hard as a woman also). In my experience as a man, we aren't taught powerful ways to be with fear. We are taught to fight someone threatening or pushing us physically into fear or walk away from it. But what happens when you can't fight or walk away from what scares you?

The fear kept me in a good enough situation when an extraordinary life was possible. I, as you know, leaped, as my client did. And while this move might not be for everyone, it's possible.

I ask myself every day. At the end of my life, what matters most? What do I want people to say about me when I leave this planet? What impact do I want to have? What kind of man do I want to be? And what would have me feeling like I lived my best life?

Every day, I do my best to follow the answers to these questions forward. What we do today creates tomorrow and so on, so if your work, choices, or actions don't align with the future you want to create, today is the day to start making changes.

As my client swims with manatees today, I celebrate our work, my reverence for him, and his courage and commitment. And I hold close to my heart that all our goals and dreams are possible; sometimes, we have to risk the good to get great.

How bad do you want what you want? It might feel impossible like it's not the right time, or scary. It might cost you money, time, comfort, or the good life you have created. But if you are willing to follow your truth, vision, and goals, you cannot fail. And I'm here to support that into reality.
